Grab a coffee — this one's worth it.
The rules have changed again. We break down the three signals the Reels algorithm weighs most heavily this year — and how service businesses can use them without dancing on camera.
If you've watched your Reels reach flatline over the last two quarters, you're not alone — and it isn't your content. Instagram has quietly re-weighted the ranking model that powers Reels, and the signals that mattered in 2024 are no longer the ones moving the needle.
The first signal: watch-through rate, not view count. The algorithm now treats a three-second view as table stakes. What it actually rewards is the percentage of viewers who stay past the seven-second mark. A Reel with 50,000 views and a 12% watch-through will outrank a Reel with 200,000 views and a 4% watch-through almost every time. This is why hooks — the first line of text or the first frame of motion — matter more than the edit that follows.
The second signal: sends and saves over likes. Instagram's own engineering team has confirmed that shares (especially DM sends) and saves are now the strongest engagement predictors for feed distribution. A Reel that gets saved by 200 people will outperform one with 2,000 likes. The implication for service businesses is clear: create content worth bookmarking — checklists, before-and-afters, quick tutorials — not just content worth double-tapping.
The third signal: session time contribution. This is the one most creators miss. Instagram now evaluates whether your Reel caused a viewer to stay in the app longer by watching more content. If your Reel leads someone down a rabbit hole, the algorithm credits you. Practically, this means ending with a related-content cue or a strong reason to visit your profile and keep watching.
For service businesses — realtors, dentists, contractors, lawyers — the takeaway is liberating: you do not need to dance. You need to be useful, fast, and bookmarkable. A 12-second Reel explaining one thing your client doesn't know will outperform a polished brand video almost every time under the new model.
We're tracking these shifts weekly. If you want a breakdown of how the new signals apply to your specific industry, pull up a chair — we'll map it out for you.
